New Week, New Projects!

Students this week are transitioning to new projects. We are finishing up last weeks beautiful masterpieces and starting on brand new assignments each with a new focus.
Here are some updates on each classes new project!

Kindergarteners are beginning a weaving project. They will be creating beautiful one of a kind fish collages and will give their fish scales using a weaving technique. This will be a great challenge for the kindergarteners as weaving is no easy task.
Just like our kindergarten students each fish is one of a kind!

1st Graders have finished their magnificent cityscape paintings, and will be starting on a self portrait series inspired by the zones of regulation. Each student will be tasked with drawing a self portrait of what they look when they are happy, sad, mad, and frustrated.

2nd Graders are beginning a beautiful landscape assignment. We will be using chalk pastels to add color, a material we have not yet used this year!

3rd Graders are finishing their self portraits and starting on a painting assignment inspired by Australian Aboriginal art. I am excited to see these paintings develop!

4th Graders have begun a rather complicated painting project! I have been so impressed with student work so far. Students created an 3D design and will add color by using their color mixing skills. Amazing progress!

5th Graders are beginning to combine elements of science and art by creating animal and plant cell inspired abstract paintings. We are still in the very beginning stages of this fun assignment.

If your artist is looking for some art projects to work on I have attached some youtube videos from my video series Brushstrokes with Mrs.Broderick. Your artist may have worked on some of these already but they can always revisit an idea!

Line, Shape and Color, OH MY

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way" - Georgia O'Keefe

As we continue to explore painting techniques, color mixing, shape and line exploration students are discovering wonderful ways of creating personalized pieces of work. One of the focuses in all of our art classes is introducing and exploring the elements of art. The elements of art include, line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color. Many of these elements can be seen in just one project. The focus with these beginning projects are line, shape, and color.

By starting with a solid foundation and understanding of line, shape, and color students gain a greater understanding of how to manipulate and transform these elements to create individualized pieces of work. It is amazing to see the work students have been creating, each project completed is an expression of each artist.

Here are some great books for younger students in grade K-2 about line, color, and shape.

Here are some student examples of students exploring line, color, and shape.

Kindergarteners were inspired by the artist Kandinsky and his use of color and shape. A great book to reference this artist is "The Noisy Paint Box" written by Barb Rosenstock.

First Graders were asked to create a painting where the background was filled different colored squares and rectangles and then asked to create a cityscape on top. Each one is different and totally unique.

Second Graders continued to explore warm and cool colors with Jasper Johns inspired number and letter painting.

Third Graders created beautiful abstract landscapes. They were then tasked with creating a variety of shades of warm and cool colors to complete their pieces.

Fourth Graders used their imagination to create cityscapes using a variety of shapes in an original and interesting way.

Fifth Graders have been working on Notans. A notan is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark elements as they are placed next to each other in the composition and imagery.

Three Primary Colors

A New Year in Art!

We are so excited to be back in our wonderful art room this year. We have spent the last two years learning a lot about different artists and influential figures throughout art history. This year we will focus on exploring different mediums and techniques that we have been unable to use in the past few years.

Students in all grades have been working hard at re discovering the color theory. We have been focused on exploring how colors work together in order to help us continue to create beautiful masterpieces.

Our warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) create a different mood than our cool colors (green, blue, and purple) given this knowledge students can begin to develop ideas about how to demonstrate a feeling in their work with only the colors they use.

We have also been exploring our complimentary colors. Red and green, orange and blue, and purple and yellow. These colors are opposites on the color but when used together make each other POP!

We will continue to explore and experiment with color and color mixing as the year goes on.

It has been such a fantastic start to the new year with students' excitement, interest, and curiosity all around the art room. Here is a quick peek at some student work being created so far.
